United States President Joe Biden said this Thursday that Russian leader Vladimir Putin “wanted to divide” NATO, but the military alliance is “more united and determined” than ever since Sweden officially joined.
“When Putin began his brutal war of aggression against the people of Ukraine, he thought he could weaken Europe and split NATO,” Biden said in a statement shortly after the Swedish prime minister handed the State Department the instrument of entry into force. .
“Instead, in May 2022, Sweden and Finland – two of our close partners with two highly capable armed forces – made the historic decision to request full membership in NATO,” the US head of state emphasized.
According to him, with the entry of Sweden, the organization “has become more united, decisive and dynamic than ever – it now includes 32 countries.”
