This Monday, the Spanish press highlights the “minimal” victory of the Democratic Alliance (AD) in Portugal in Sunday’s elections and the rise of far-right forces, which puts an end to the “socialist cycle” under the leadership of António Costa.
“Rights prevail in Portugal,” reads the front page of El Pais, which states that “the socialist cycle in Portugal appears to have come to an end” after a “very fine victory.” AD and “almost a technical draw” between the center-right alliance and the Socialist Party (PS).
The online publication El Pais has the headline: “Centre-right wins by narrow margin in Portugal as ultras demand government,” citing Chegu.
El Mundo, another Spanish national newspaper, devoted two articles to Portugal in its online edition, with one headline reading: “Portugal with a technical draw. What now?”
The newspaper writes that Portugal could experience “weeks of uncertainty” regarding the new government if PSD leader Luis Montenegro, who achieved a “minimal victory,” “maintains his commitment not to enter into agreements with the radical right of Chega.”
El Mundo highlights that “the far-right Chegi rose from 7.2% to 18% of the vote and exceeded one million votes.”
In Catalonia, the newspaper La Vanguardia writes on its front page that “right-wing forces prevail in Portugal in the face of socialist regression” and highlights the doubling of votes for the far right.
“Portugal turned right onto the path of extremism yesterday after a close countdown to almost the last vote,” writes La Vanguardia.
In Galicia, the newspaper La Voz de Galicia on the front page of the printed edition highlights the “draw in the elections in Portugal” and the “minimal” victory of the Montenegrin Administration, which will “try to form a government.”
The newspaper also emphasizes that Chega “quadrupled the number of deputies” available in the previous legislature.
Spain’s National Public Television (RTVE) posted the headline on its website: “Socialists concede victory to conservative coalition in the midst of a technical draw.”
In Sunday’s legislative elections, the AD coalition, uniting SDP, CDU and PPM, won 79 seats against 77 for the PS (28.66%), followed by Chega with 48 elected (18.06%).
IL, BE and PAN retained their mandates (eight, five and one respectively). Livre went from one elected representative to four, and the CDU lost two seats and was left with four deputies.
The four seats for emigrants in the Assembly of the Republic, which the PS won in 2022 with three mandates, have yet to be determined.
