Brazilian President Lula da Silva said this Monday that former football player Robinho should serve a prison sentence in Brazil after he was found guilty of raping a woman in Italy.
“Rape is an unforgivable crime. Therefore, people must be tried and convicted. Robinho was already convicted in Italy and should have served his sentence here,” the Brazilian head of state said in an interview with SBT.
“People need to learn that sexual relationships are not just about desire on one side. The consent of the parties is at stake,” Lula da Silva emphasized.
Robinho, who played for clubs including Real Madrid, Manchester City, Milan and Santos, is in Brazil, although without a passport and therefore unable to leave the country.
In 2022, Italian justice found him guilty of participating in the gang rape of a young Albanian girl in a Milan nightclub in 2013.
The rape occurred while Robinho was playing for Milan and also involved his friend Ricardo Falco, who was also convicted.
However, the warrant was not executed because the former football player was in Brazil, whose constitution prohibits the extradition of citizens of the country.
Brazil’s Supreme Court is expected to decide on March 20 whether to approve Italy’s verdict.
