At least six people were killed and three more were missing after two canoes sank last week in Niassa province in northern Mozambique, a police source told Lusa on Tuesday.
The incidents occurred in the districts of Sanga, Madimba, Mavago and Marrupa between Tuesday and Friday last week, said Mirza Maguanda, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Niassa.
Two shipwrecks on Wednesday and Thursday resulted in the death of five people and the disappearance of one, while four others were rescued.
“One canoe sank due to poor condition. It was not in seaworthy condition, and the other sank due to rising water levels in the river,” explained a PRM spokeswoman.
In Mawago and Marrup, one person died and two others were missing after drowning after being swept away while crossing a river.
The police said that operational search activities are being carried out.
