The conditions in which refugees without accommodation in Ireland live lead to the development of various diseases, RTÉ reports on March 12.
We are talking in particular about about 200 refugees who live near the International Protection Office on Mount Street. There are currently about 150 tents set up on the streets.
Volunteers helping refugees are sounding the alarm and calling on the government to intervene. It is noted that there are no toilets or garbage containers near the tents, a pile of garbage grows, and there is a persistent smell of sewage.
Volunteer doctors indicate the development of respiratory and skin diseases. Doctors are especially concerned about cases of scabies. It will be very difficult to deal with this disease on the street and it is contagious.
“Many people have respiratory tract infections, skin infections and simply do not have sanitary conditions.“gynecologist Eve Gogan, who responded to calls for help, told reporters. — “They will be at risk of contracting many gastrointestinal infections and it will be very difficult to prevent the spread of the infection to their immediate neighbors.”.
Volunteers helping refugees name conditions “almost inhuman”. “We are shocked and demand that something be done because, as you can see for yourself, the conditions are heartbreaking.”“” Mary Batterbury, a member of the organization Social Rights Ireland, described what was happening.
Recall that the Irish government has announced that it can no longer provide accommodation to all refugees arriving in Ireland and will only do so for vulnerable categories of asylum seekers. Young men do not fall into this category.
Since then, the number of homeless refugees in Ireland has exceeded 1,000.
