Sao Paulo military police agents killed an unarmed man with physical problems who was sitting on the sidewalk next to two crutches. Suddenly the police arrived and started shooting at him and other people.
The brutal death of Leonel Andrade Santos, which occurred in Morro de São Bento, in the city of Santos, on the southern coast of São Paulo state, is another of the reports of police executions of innocent people that have been kept secret by residents. as corporate revenge on innocent citizens after an agent was killed in the region by drug traffickers in early February.
A photo sent to the press by a resident who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals shows Leonel sitting on the edge of the sidewalk minutes before he was killed. The resident took a photo of the sidewalk outside her home and sent it to the courier to make it easier to find the item she bought, and inadvertently caught Leonel in the image.
Before the courier arrived, military police agents armed with military rifles arrived and began shooting at people in the street, none of whom were armed or posing any threat. In addition to Leonel, who was unable to get up from the ground, another person died during the police action – Jefferson Ramos Miranda. In the attack report, agents wrote that upon arriving on this street in Morro Sao Bento, a poor area of the city, Leonel and Jefferson, described in the police report as two dangerous criminals, were in possession of large-caliber weapons. and fired at agents who were forced to respond to the suspected attack.
It was this version, completely distorted according to witnesses, that led the resident to send a photograph of Leonel, published this Wednesday, March 13, in the press, more than a month after the man’s death, on February 9. Although she feared police retaliation, the resident sympathized with the pain of Leonel’s family, outraged by the death and accusations that the man was a criminal.
Leonel’s family said that in addition to mobility problems that forced him to use crutches, the man also had problems with his hands and would never be able to hold a weapon. In February CM witnessed yet another violent attack by military police in another area of Santos, when a policeman wrestled an elderly man in his 80s to the ground and shot twice at an unarmed resident protesting the attack.
