Space X’s Starship rocket, intended to eventually carry astronauts to the moon and beyond, completed a nearly complete test flight before being destroyed, the agency said Thursday. Reuters.
Mission control lost contact with the spacecraft as it entered the atmosphere. The craft was approaching its scheduled splashdown in the Indian Ocean about an hour after launch. According to Space X, the rocket burned out, crashed or fell into the sea. During the flight, it reached a maximum altitude of 234 kilometers.
Two previous performances ended in explosions within minutes of launch. The completion of most of the test flight path was an important milestone for the satellite launch business of Elon Musk, owner of Space X, and NASA’s lunar program.
