March 16 marked the 36th anniversary of Iraq’s chemical attack on the city of Halabja in Iran, the Tasnim news agency reported on March 16.
A ceremony was held in Iran to commemorate the attack by the Iraqi Air Force on the city of Halabadja with chemical munitions.
Recall that the Iraqi city of Halabaja during the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-1988 was controlled by Iranian troops and allied Iraqi-Kurdish units. On March 16, 1988, the Iraqi air force attacked Halabja.
During the bombing, the Iraqi Air Force used chemical weapons, including nerve agents such as VX and mustard gas. The main victims of the attack were civilians.
Iranian estimates indicate that between 3,200 and 5,000 people were killed and another 7,000 to 10,000 wounded, most of them civilians.
It should be noted that on March 1, 2010, the Iraqi High Criminal Court recognized the Halabja massacre as an act of genocide.
