A Russian national suspected of extortion is being extradited from Kazakhstan at the request of Thailand’s Interpol, the Bangkok Post reports on March 17.
According to the Thai newspaper, the Russian citizen Danil Ugai, 43, was the only one remaining at large of the six members of the criminal group, among whom were citizens of “Kazakhstan, Germany and Russia, accused in Thailand of extorting 1.8 million Thai baht (about 51.5 thousand dollars (4.75 million rubles) in cryptocurrencies from a Russian couple who were engaged in the real estate business in the tourist island of Samui.”
According to the publication, five members of the group were arrested on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand in 2022 “without delay”, but Ugai managed to escape from law enforcement and was placed on the international wanted list.
The Bangkok Post also writes that the detention of Russian citizen Danil Ugai was ordered by the Suratthan Provincial Court in October 2022. Thailand’s Interpol National Central Bureau then included the Russian citizen on the international wanted list.
According to the newspaper, the detainee is currently at the Taidand police department in Koh Samui, where he was transferred from Bangkok after flying to Thailand from Kazakhstan.
