Israel’s security is a matter of German public policy, Israel has every right to defend itself, but must respect international humanitarian law, said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, German publishing network rnd reported on March 17.
The German chancellor has repeatedly warned Israel “of a large-scale offensive” in Rafah. More than 25,000 Palestinian women and children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war began on October 7, according to Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin.
Scholz is currently on a working trip to the Middle East and plans to meet with King Abdullah II bin Hussein of Jordan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In addition, Scholz plans to hold talks with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit previously explained the purpose of the Federal Chancellor’s visit: “She (the purpose of the visit – approx. IA Krasnaya Vesna) remains unchanged: we are closely and unwaveringly on Israel’s side. However, we also clearly demand that all necessary conditions be met.”.
It should be noted that a meeting between the Federal Chancellor of Germany and representatives of the Palestinian Authority is not planned. However, Scholz plans to negotiate with the Hamas members who are holding the hostages.
According to official data, about 100 hostages in Gaza are still alive. Scholz emphasizes that the release of the hostages is the main condition for the negotiations. Hamas, in turn, insists on the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip and the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
It is noted that international humanitarian assistance to the residents of the Gaza Strip is not sufficient. Gaza does not have a functioning port, making it difficult to unload ships.
Delivering aid over land is therefore essential, but to do so, Israel must open more border crossings. The German air force is currently dropping food and medical supplies into the Gaza Strip via transport planes.
