After meeting with the German chancellor, he added that Israel will not leave civilians trapped in Rafah when they begin their assault. For his part, Scholz has pointed out that “we cannot stand by and watch Palestinians run the risk of dying of hunger.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that would continue his offensive against Hamas in Gaza, while ceasefire talks resumed today, Sunday.
Netanyahu has noted that Israel will advance towards Rafahthe last relatively safe place in the small, overcrowded enclave of Gaza after more than five months of war, despite international pressure for Israel to stop killing civilians.
After meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Jerusalem, he added that Israel will not leave civilians trapped in Rafah when his forces begin their assault.
Israel’s allies have increased the pressure on Netanyahu not to attack Rafah, where more than a million displaced people from other parts of the devastated enclave have sought refuge. Before this pressure, Netanyahu has criticized the “short memory” of the international community with the “Hamas attacks of October 7”.
Scholz: “We cannot see how Palestinians risk starvation”
For his part, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, after the meeting this Sunday with the Israeli Prime Minister, has urged the entry of more humanitarian aid into Gaza and has questioned Netanyahu on high number of civilians dead after more than five months of war in Gaza.
“We cannot stand by and watch as Palestinians risk dying of hunger, that is not what we represent together,” Scholz told Netanyahu in the Israeli president’s office.
Scholz has also shown himself opposite to the ground invasion of Rafahthe last safe haven in the Gaza Strip with more than 1.4 million displaced Gazans and where, according to Israel, four Hamas battalions are still active.
Finally, Scholz has also asked Netanyahu for a greater flexibility to reach an agreement to release the 134 hostages believed to remain in the hands of Hamas, many already dead, and has said he understands the suffering of the relatives, who protest every weekend for the release of their loved ones.
