Poet Nuno Iudice has died at the age of 74.

According to the official announcement on the website of the President of the Republic, Nuno Judice, one of the most distinguished and famous Portuguese poets, died this Sunday at the age of 74.

To the family, and especially to his wife Manuela Giudice, the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “expresses sincere regret, gratitude and tribute.”

“It is with deep regret and horror that we learned in Leia and especially in the Quixote House of the sad news of the death of Nuno Judice, who fell victim to illness today in Lisbon. News that shocked everyone who worked most closely with Nuno Giudice. but, of course, all his many readers and fans. And this undoubtedly makes Portuguese literature and poetry poorer,” can be read in the statement sent to Lusa.

The poet was born in Mexilloeira Grande, in Portimão, Faro district, in 1949.He was a decisive author during the period of transition of Portuguese poetry between the experimental trends of the 1960s and the more everyday tone of the 80s and subsequent years.”

The note notes that “even in the context of the generation of the 70s to which he belonged, he was unlike any other with his sometimes long, discursive, meditative poems, late romantic tone, questions about the concept of a poem, later – evocative, melancholy or ironic tendency.”

Nuno was the most “internationally recognized” poet and received, among many others, the Ibero-American Reina Sofia Prize for Ibero-American Poetry in 2013, the Pen Club Prize and the D. Dinis Prize from the Casa de Mateus.

Among other things, until 2015 he was also a professor at the New University of Lisbon, a translator and organizer of anthologies, and director of literary magazines such as Tabacaria and Colóquio-Letras. He also worked as a cultural adviser at the Portuguese Embassy in Paris, where he also directed the Camões Institute.

He received the Grand Prix for Poetry from the Association of Portuguese Writers for “Meditação sobre Ruínas”, a finalist for the European Prize for Literature.
