An illegally constructed five-story building collapsed in the Indian city of Kolkata, capital of the state of West Bengal, killing at least two people, Republic television channel reported on March 18.
The report says that the tragedy occurred in an area of the city called Metiabrus in the so-called. South Calcutta. It happened late in the afternoon of Sunday, March 17.
According to local residents, large pieces of concrete began to fall from the building before the collapse. At the same time, debris fell on nearby shacks in a densely populated area of the city.
During the search operation, 13 people were rescued and two were declared dead. Another five or six people remain under the rubble.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Benerjee reached the site of the collapse. After evaluating the situation, she noted that “the building was built illegally”. For this reason “An order has been given to investigate the accident”.
“Serious consequences await those who participated in the construction of this building.”Benerjee said.
He stressed that the authorities will help the relatives of the dead and injured. According to the decision of the city authorities, the first will receive compensation of 500 thousand rupees (~$6000), the second – 100 thousand rupees (~$1200).
