The Mozambican government admits that the number of deaths from terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado in 2023 has dropped to less than a hundred people, after more than 250 victims per year between 2019 and 2022.
In the report of the National Terrorism Financing Risk Assessment, which Lusa had access to this Monday, the Mozambican government states that “the level of terrorist attacks in the annual comparative analysis was “average” for 2017 and 2018, “high” to “very high” in 2020 and 2021, “high” in 2022 and “medium” in 2023.”
“Over the same period, the death rate from indiscriminate attacks on the population was “average” in 2017 and 2018, and “very high” between 2019 and 2022, exceeding 250 deaths per year. The trend is now declining, falling to fewer than 100 deaths in 2023, which is “average,” the document said, with data through 2023.
