UN experts have expressed deep concern about racism against people of African descent in Norway, the NRK news agency reports.
The agency indicates that a working group with black experts visited Norway. The group was created in 2002 and is part of the UN Human Rights Council, but its members are not UN staff. After visiting Norway, the experts issued a press release saying they were concerned about discrimination against people of African descent in the country.
Experts have called on the government to take necessary measures to include people of African descent in society without facing prejudice. They noted that racism persists even though Norway, among other things, has a political and institutional framework to combat racism and good measures to combat hate crimes.
“Yet, people of African descent face racial discrimination, hate speech, racist bullying in schools, barriers to employment, and forced removal of children through child protective services.”the experts said.
