Incidents following the game between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe (2-3) on Sunday, with invasion of fans and attacks on football players in Trabzon, led to the arrest of 12 people, the Turkish Interior Minister said this Monday.
“Twelve people were found involved in incidents that occurred after the Trabzonspor-Fenerbahce game and were detained,” Ali Yerlikaya said on the X social network.
The incident occurred after the final whistle at the Trabzonspor stadium when a fan walked towards players of the losing home team to attack him, followed by others and clashes between the two sides began.
The images show, among other things, punches being exchanged, a fan threatening a player with a corner flag, Fenerbahce goalkeeper Livakovic being hit in the face, Batshuayi beating a fan and other incidents.
“Absolutely unacceptable violence that has no place in our sport, either on or off the field,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino reacted today in a statement published on the social network Instagram.
The head of world football added that safety is an asset that all players must have in their practice and called on authorities to ensure this rule is respected at all levels.
“Let those responsible for the shocking events in Trabzon be held accountable for their actions,” Infantino added.
In the information provided today, the Turkish minister also said that in addition to the 12 people detained for their involvement in the incidents, five more people are in police custody for inciting violence on social networks.
Sunday’s events added to a long list of violent incidents in Turkish football’s history and come after the league was suspended for a week in December when Ankaragucu’s president attacked a referee.
There are several Portuguese players in the Turkish league, such as Sergio Oliveira (Galatasaray), Gedson Fernandes (Besiktas), Rocinha (Kasimpasa) or Nani (Adana Demirspor), as well as former national team player Fernando Santos, who signed a contract with Besiktas in January.
