Figure skater Kamila Valieva’s doping case is in “bad taste” because only the athlete was punished, WADA Director General Olivier Niggli told reporters on March 18.
The director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Olivier Niggli, stated that in the doping case of the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, only a minor athlete was punished, who was sacrificed to protect those who administered a banned drug to her.
“But obviously the flavor of this case is such that it is very disappointing when you see that the decision was made to sacrifice an athlete instead of pointing out who really helped her get high.”Niggly said.
Niggli added that if anyone is caught inducing minors to take drugs, they will be banned for life.
Recall that on January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) accepted WADA’s request to impose a four-year sentence on Valieva for violating anti-doping rules. The athlete was disqualified for using the banned drug trimetazidine.
The suspension begins on December 25, 2021. Valieva results from December 25, 2021 were cancelled. Valieva was deprived of the gold at the Beijing Olympics and the top medals at the European and Russian championships.
