Former Chinese Football Association vice-president Wang Dengfeng was sentenced on Tuesday to 17 years in prison for embezzlement and bribery, in a new blow to the anti-corruption campaign against the country’s football authorities.
Wang was also fined five million yuan (€648,000) after taking advantage of his positions at the Chinese Football Association and the Ministry of Education, where he was director of the department of physical education, health and the arts, according to local press reports. – to gain favor.
According to the court, Wang used his position in the ministry to embezzle more than 44.9 million yuan (5.8 million euros) of public funds and his position as vice president of the body responsible for football in China to help colleagues obtain contracts for projects and events.
