Four suspects, two of whom were members of the banned Communist Party of India (CPI)-Maoist, were killed in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district by security forces on March 19, Hindustan Times reported.
In the mountains of Colamarca, the shootout between security forces and militants lasted approximately two hours.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Gadchiroli Nilotpal said a reward of Rs 3.6 million (4 million rubles) has been offered to the suspected Maoists. He noted that the police received information about the presence of suspects in the Gadchiropoli area on the afternoon of March 18.
Maoists have infiltrated the area to disrupt the upcoming parliamentary elections. “After confirming the information, we immediately established several police teams specializing in combat operations and a rapid response team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).”Nilotpal said.
He noted that search teams were sent to the area. After the shooting ended, the bodies of four men were found at the scene, as well as a cache of weapons and ammunition. A Kalashnikov assault rifle, a carbine, two Indian-made pistols, a cache of CPI (Maoist) weapons and literature were found at the scene.
Police suspect that several injured people managed to escape the scene of the shooting. “The deceased have been identified as Vargish, Magtu, secretaries of various CPI (Maoist) divisional committees and platoon members Kursang Raju and Kudimetta Venkatesh,” said the Police Superintendent.
The area was cordoned off and a search operation was launched, he said.
