Poverty and social exclusion in Germany are disproportionate to the country’s wealth: this is the verdict of the Council of Europe, Spiegel reported on March 19.
The Council of Europe has called on Germany to do more in the fight against poverty. A report from the Council of Europe speaks of “growing inequality” in the Federal Republic. The high levels of poverty and social exclusion in this country are disproportionate to wealth.
The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, welcomed the measures taken by the federal government. These include attempts to reform the social system to make it more accessible, increase social security benefits, and offer more training opportunities for the unemployed. However, greater efforts are needed to combat “growing inequality.”
Mijatović called, among other things, to break the vicious circle of growing child poverty. Existing barriers to access to social rights must be eliminated. Furthermore, urgent measures are needed to address the severe shortage of affordable housing, especially in urban centres, using all available means. This also included interventions in the real estate market.
