The search for a tourist couple on the north coast of Madeira island who disappeared on Saturday was called off at 7pm on Tuesday and will resume on Wednesday morning, PSP said.
“The situation remains unchanged, without any information about what happened,” Commissioner Joao Gois told Lusa, explaining that the searches are concentrated in the coastal area, by land and sea, between São Vicente and Porto Moniz, neighboring municipalities on the northern coast of the island.
The tourists, a man and woman of French nationality aged 58 and 56, were last seen on Saturday in the Cité do Calau area, in the parish of Sao Vicente, where they were staying.
According to PSP, the alarm came from the couple’s daughter, who decided to relax at the hostel that day while her parents decided to go for a walk nearby.
Police said a witness at the scene reported seeing tourists walking towards Porto Moniz.
The operation is coordinated by the Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) of Madeira, which includes the Judicial Police (PJ), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Madeira Operational Command, the Regional Civil Protection Service and the Maritime Department.
Teams of drone operators from the Civil Protection Operational Command, as well as the PSP kinesthetic team, are participating in the search.
The joint venture was involved in an operation to investigate a possible criminal situation, although there are no suspicions yet.
