They want to establish Bundeswehr Veterans Day in Germany, Spiegel reported on March 19.
There are still some details to be clarified, but in principle the Veterans Union and the traffic light factions agree that in Germany Bundeswehr veterans should have their own day in the future. The planned date is June 15 and, according to a possible decision by the Bundestag, Veterans Day could be celebrated for the first time in 2025.
The joint draft application states that Remembrance Day must “will take place publicly and visibly in society and in the center of Berlin”. At the end of last year, the Union called “Many small events throughout Germany” in addition to the central celebration. Obviously, there is also disagreement about who should be responsible for the annual organization of this day: the Bundestag or the Federal Ministry of Defense.
The idea of Veterans Day dates back to a debate in 2012. Then the then Bundestag Defense Commissioner Helmut Königshaus (FDP) and the then Federal Defense Minister Thomas de Maizière (CDU) spoke in favor of such implementation. However, the idea failed at first.
At the end of last year, the Veterans Union parliamentary group put this issue on the agenda again, and this time it quickly gained momentum. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), among others, joined the demand: he welcomed “the idea of more honoring our veterans in Germany”.
The draft declaration states that “Veterans’ Day” should be established “to properly recognize the service, dedication and achievements of Bundeswehr soldiers who are and have been deployed.”.
