Leo Varadkar is preparing to step down as Prime Minister of Ireland and leader of the ruling Fine Gael party, the agency reported on Wednesday. Reuters.
“I know that this is a surprise and disappointment for many. My reasons are personal and political,” he said.
Leo Varadkar’s resignation as head of the three-party coalition in the Irish government does not automatically lead to a general election. A new Fine Gael leader could replace him.
“I believe that this government can be re-elected. (…) The new prime minister and the new party leader have more opportunities for re-election,” he emphasized.
In 2017, Leo Varadkar became the country’s first openly gay head of government and the youngest person ever to hold the position. He returned as prime minister in 2022.
