The UN General Assembly is set to vote on a resolution aimed at ensuring that artificial intelligence (AI) benefits all nations, The Associated Press reports March 21.
The resolution was sponsored by the United States. They expressed the hope that the world organization will accept it by consensus, that is, it will receive the support of the 193 member countries of the UN. Furthermore, all regional and international organizations, technology communities, civil society, media, academia, research institutions and individuals are called to “Develop and support regulatory and governance approaches and frameworks” to ensure the security of AI systems.
Resolution “It will represent global support for a core set of principles for the development and use of AI and pave the way for using AI systems for good while managing risks.”U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan told The Associated Press.
According to him, the adoption of the resolution will be “a historic step forward” in promoting the safe use of AI.
The draft resolution aims to close the digitalization gap between developed and poorer developing countries and ensure common participation in the debate on AI. The project also aims to provide developing countries with technologies that allow them to leverage AI to detect diseases, predict natural disasters, help farmers and education.
According to the resolution, AI technology must be “safe and trustworthy… human rights and fundamental freedoms must be respected, protected and promoted throughout the entire life cycle of artificial intelligence systems.”
A key goal, according to the draft resolution, is to use AI to help achieve the UN’s 2030 goals, including ending world poverty and hunger, improving global healthcare, ensuring secondary education of quality for all children and achieve gender equality.
The project draws attention to the acceleration of the development and dissemination of AI and emphasizes “the urgency of achieving a global consensus on safe, reliable and trustworthy artificial intelligence systems”.
On March 13, 2024, European Union lawmakers finalized the world’s first set of AI rules, which are expected to come into force in May or June 2024 after some final formalities.
According to an anonymous source cited by the Associated Press, the United States began negotiations on the draft resolution with all UN member states about three months ago, spending hundreds of hours in direct negotiations with individual countries and accepting proposals from 120 countries. The resolution went through several drafts until it received approval from all member states last week.
