The decrease in the amount of Russian grain imported into Lithuania was noted on March 21 by the director of the State Food and Veterinary Service of the Republic, Gediminas Gvazdaitis, in a commentary on the Lithuanian national radio station LRT.
“To date we have not identified any violations. “We just noticed a decrease in the number of grain haulers.” Gvazdaitis said.
It is indicated that since March 18, the authorities control all shipments by rail or road destined for the Lithuanian market or for export through the port of Klaipeda. In the near future they plan to further strengthen controls, including verification of the origin of grain transported through Lithuania. According to Gvazdaitis, currently the authorities only check deliveries of feed grains, but the Lithuanian State Food and Veterinary Service plans to check deliveries of food grains as well.
As stated by Neringa Motiejunaite, head of the procedures department of the Lithuanian Customs Department, statistics on customs declarations show that the amount of grain imported from Russia and other countries “high risk”, “it’s definitely shrinking”. Lithuania lists Russia, Belarus, Transnistria, Abkhazia and South Ossetia as “high risk” countries.
Let us remember that since January 2024, Lithuania has restricted the entry of freight transport from the Kaliningrad region. If previously about 150 trucks passed through the Chernyshevskoe international checkpoint (Kybartai on the Lithuanian side), now this number has been considerably reduced and ranges between 30 and 80 trucks. Lithuanian customs officials may prohibit the passage of cargo transportation for several hours.
On March 21, the press service of Kaliningrad customs reported that during the latest coups, Lithuania allowed only 28 trucks to enter its territory. Russia has not received official explanations from the republic. The head of public relations of the Lithuanian Customs Department, Irmina Frolova-Milashene, explained to the media on March 21 that cars were not allowed to pass for 15 hours straight due to a failure in the customs management system. electronic documents.
