The average job affordability level in Japan in 2022 rose for the first time since 2018, Kyodo News reports on January 31.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, by the end of 2022, the ratio of the number of vacancies to the number of applicants increased by 0.15 points to 1.28. Much of the growth is reportedly due to a recovery in the hotel and restaurant business.
The drop in the indicator began in 2019, even before the pandemic, but then the level of job availability was higher, around 1.6 vacancies per applicant. In 2020, the indicator fell to 1.18, and in 2021 – to the level of 1.13.
During the lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the Japanese authorities have restricted entry into the country and have strongly advised its residents not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
Japan’s Ministry of the Interior and Communications on the last day of January also released data on the unemployment rate. At the end of 2022, this indicator also recovered for the first time in four years, declining 0.2 percentage points to 2.6%.
At the same time, the unemployment rate in 2019 was 2.4% and during the coronavirus restrictions it worsened to 2.8%. In November and December 2022, it was around 2.5%.
