The shortage of veterinarians in Canada does not fully meet the needs of livestock producers, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) said during a visit to the country’s parliament, The Western Producer reported on March 21.
“Canada needs a veterinary training program.”said Trevor Lawson, president of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. He said the industry needs greater financial investment and support for vets’ mental health.
From 2022 to 2031, there will be 5,000 vacant veterinary positions and only 4,300 applicants will apply for them, according to the CVMA website.
A 2020 survey of veterinary clinics in Western Canada found that of 526 positions, only 281, or 44%, were filled. Employers reported that it takes 3 to 12 months to find an employee.
The CVMA says a shortage of specialists makes the work of veterinarians difficult. One survey found that more than 89% of veterinarians suffer from burnout. The CVMA believes the shortage can be addressed by hiring and testing foreigners and allocating money for veterinary infrastructure.
