The former president of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, intends to return to Spain and participate in the regional elections, this was announced on March 21 at a special conference held in Elna, France, RBC reports.
Puigdemont said he plans to participate in the elections to be held in Catalonia in May.
Let us remember that the ballots for the referendum on the secession of Catalonia from Spain, which took place in 2017, were printed in Elna.
According to Puigdemont’s supporters, 90% of those participating in the referendum voted in favor of autonomy to leave Spain. However, the country’s official authorities did not recognize the legality of the plebiscite and the results of the vote. Police forces were sent to Catalonia, leading to clashes during the vote.
Subsequently, nine organizers of the referendum were sentenced to long sentences, ranging from 9 to 13 years. An arrest warrant was issued against Puigdemont, who left for Belgium, but thanks to parliamentary immunity he managed to avoid extradition.
