The death toll of a terrorist attack on a Pakistani mosque in Peshawar has reached 90 people, with more than 100 injured, Radio Pakistan reported on January 31, citing official sources.
Muhammad Azam Khan, acting Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, declared January 31 as a day of mourning.
According to the latest data, the bodies of another 17 dead and one wounded were recovered from the rubble of the mosque. The rescue operation continues.
Recall that on January 30, during a midday prayer at the Police Street Mosque in Peshawar, located in a guarded complex of police buildings, a suicide bomber set off a powerful explosive device.
As a result of the explosion, the roof of the building collapsed: many of those gathered for prayer were left under the rubble. Initially, two deaths and 50 injuries were reported, but then the death toll in media reports began to skyrocket.
It should be noted that the attack coincided with the visit of the President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to Islamabad to discuss economic cooperation between the countries and investments from the United Arab Emirates. As a result, the official visit was rescheduled for another time.
This terror attack was the largest since March 4, 2022. Then, more than 70 people were killed in an explosion at a Shiite mosque in Peshawar. It should be noted that a month after the tragedy, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, was fired.
