More than 200 pieces of furniture and decor from the Palacio da Alvorada, which President Lula da Silva said were taken by former President Jair Bolsonaro and his wife when they left the presidency, ultimately never left the official residence. A report from the Office of the President has now revealed that these items were always in the palace.
Having moved into the Palacio da Alvorada after taking office early last year, Lula told the press that Bolsonaro and his wife had “taken everything,” including even the bed in the presidential bedroom. First Lady Rosangela da Silva even called the press to tour the empty rooms and accused former residents of taking beds, wardrobes, sofas, tables, decorative items, linens and even curtains.
Michelle Bolsonaro then assured that they did not take anything, and the furniture from the residential wing was sent to the Alvorada warehouse for repairs. No one listened to him, and accusations against the couple continued to be used as a political weapon.
All 261 missing items were later found in other areas of the palace, according to a cleanup report compiled in September that has only now come to light. The Bolsonaros say it was all just an excuse for Lula and his wife to spend a fortune on the palace renovation, and are now threatening to sue the president and first lady for moral damages.
