Russia, which has not suffered a terrorist attack since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022, has been the scene of several serious attacks over the past 15 years. A group of armed men in military uniform opened fire this Friday in a concert hall in Moscow, where explosions were also recorded, as a result of which the number of victims has not been established.
Russia has a long history of terrorist attacks this century, the most serious of which occurred in 2002, when Chechen commandos took some 850 hostages at the Dubrovka theater in Moscow, whose rescue operation resulted in a “bloodbath” with at least 170 deaths.
Other attacks have followed over the past 15 years:
– In 2009, as a result of an attack on the Nevsky Express high-speed train connecting Moscow with St. Petersburg, 27 people were killed and more than 150 were injured.
– In 2010, two Chechen suicide bombers detonated bomb belts, killing 40 people and injuring more than 140 at two Moscow metro stations.
– In 2011, a bomb explosion at Domodedovo International Airport in the Russian capital killed 37 people and injured 172.
– In 2017, a suicide bombing in the St. Petersburg metro killed 16 and injured more than 64.
– On March 22, 2024, Russian authorities and security services reported that several people were killed in a shooting by unknown assailants using automatic weapons in a concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow.
