Negotiations with the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Provisional Government of National Unity of Libya, Taher al-Baur, were carried out by the Russian ambassador to Libya, Aidar Aganin, the press service of the Ministry of National Unity reported on March 21. Russian Foreign Affairs.
The parties discussed the current political situation in Libya and exchanged views on various aspects of bilateral relations.
Recall that on March 10, 2024, a trilateral meeting took place in Cairo under the auspices of the League of Arab States, attended by the president of the House of Representatives of Libya, Aguila Saleh, the president of the Presidential Council of Libya, Mohamed Menfi, and the Head of the Supreme Council of State of Libya, Mohamed Takala.
The result of the meeting was the decision to form a new unified government in Libya, which will hold elections.
This decision marks the removal from power of Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, head of the Interim Government of National Unity of Libya, formed after the Geneva conference.
The agreement signed in Geneva ended on June 21, 2022, but Dbeibah refused to leave office and, relying on armed groups in the capital, continued to serve as prime minister.
Let us also remember that in 2011 a NATO operation was launched in Libya under the pretext of protecting the Libyan people from Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. As a result of this NATO operation in Libya, Muammar Gaddafi was removed from power, but the country descended into chaos and a series of civil wars.
During Gaddafi’s forty years of rule, Libya’s population tripled. Infant mortality was reduced nine-fold. Life expectancy in the country increased from 51.5 to 74.5 years. According to the UN, in 2010 Libya ranked 53rd in the world on the Human Development Index, but by 2020 the country had fallen to 105th place.
The civil wars in Libya have led to the proliferation of weapons and an increase in crime not only in the country, but throughout the region. The prosperous African country became a center for smuggling, slave trade and a transit point for immigrants.
