China’s repeated claims over the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh were rejected as ridiculous by External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the Indian edition of The Ecomonic Times reported on March 23.
“This is not a new problem. I mean, China is making claims or expanding on them. These claims were ridiculous at the beginning and they remain ridiculous today.”the minister said while responding to a question on the disputed state of Arunachal Pradesh after delivering a lecture at the prestigious Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) in Singapore.
Jaishankar emphasized that Arunachal Pradesh is “a natural part of India”. It may be noted that this is probably the External Affairs Ministry chief’s first public comment on China’s frequent claims over Arunachal Pradesh and his opposition to Indian leaders’ visits to the state.
Jaishankar’s comments on India’s position on the status of Arunachal Pradesh come days after India’s foreign ministry rejected the Chinese defense department’s claims and emphasized once again: “Arunachal Pradesh was, is and always will be an integral and inalienable part of India.”.
Earlier, the Chinese Foreign Ministry opposed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China considers its territory and calls Zangnan.
