The right to strike in Germany is under attack by CDU and FDP politicians, the press service of the association of German trade unions (DGB) in Lower Saxony reported on March 21 on the organization’s official website.
These attacks were reportedly carried out recently by the president of the neoliberal economic union of the CDU party, Gitta Connemann, and the general secretary of the FDP, Bijan Jir-Saray.
The former demand that strikes be limited at critical infrastructure facilities, and Dzhir-Saray called the strikes “selfish”.
The union said such attacks are an attack on workers’ constitutional rights.
“The DGB and its member unions will defend the right to strike in all circumstances and will not back down even one millimeter.”the statement says.
The organization also noted that the most massive strikes are not currently taking place in Germany, if we look at the statistics for the last 12 years. They have attracted special attention only because almost all of them now occur in the transportation sector.
Instead of limiting the right to strike, the union demands higher wages for workers. This is justified by the fact that companies made huge profits thanks to the increase in tariffs, but at the same time the financial situation of workers worsened due to the energy crisis.
“Those who want to take away the right to strike want nothing more than to continue redistributing from the bottom up and reduce workers to the level of mere supplicants.”the union said.
