Deputies were forced to sign pledges for the first time

The first meeting of the parliament with the composition obtained from the results of the legislative elections on March 10th must be scheduled for next Tuesday, the 26th, in order to meet the deadlines established by law, after the official publication of the election results this Saturday, on the Diary of the Republic.” With the change in the rules of the Assembly of the Republic, deputies, as in the case of ministers, will for the first time have to sign an undertaking according to which they will “respect and enforce the Constitution.”

The Assembly’s rules of procedure were changed last year to include the requirement for all deputies to sign a term of office at the first plenary session of the legislature. This will also serve to elect the President of the Assembly of the Republic, on whose behalf the Social Democrat José Pedro Aguiar-Branco was appointed.

The Democratic Alliance (AD) won the legislative elections, albeit by a narrow margin, official results released this Saturday show. He had 54 thousand more votes than the Socialists led by Pedro Nuno Santos.

In the new parliament of 230 deputies, the SDP will have 78 (one more than in the previous legislature), the PS will also have 78 (42 less), Chega increases the number of parliamentarians from 12 to 50, IL retains eight and VE, five. which he already had, and PCP dropped from six to four. Livre grows from one to four, and PAN retains its only deputy. The SDS-NP returns to parliament with two deputies obtained from the electoral coalition it formed with the SDP and the PPM, so in practice the AD has 80 deputies.

The leader of the center-right coalition, Luis Montenegro, has already been nominated for the post of Prime Minister by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The chairman of the PSD was supposed to present the government on the 28th and announced that the inauguration would take place on April 2.

AND
OVER 54 THOUSAND VOICES
The Democratic Alliance (SDP/CDU/PPM) won the legislature with the shortest margin of victory in the history of democracy for a second party – 54 thousand votes or 0.85 points. By joining Madeira (PSD/CDU), the center-right received 28.83% of the votes and 80 deputies. The PS came second with 27.98% and 78 deputies.

This was at the 2005 level.
AD, with 28.83%, had the same percentage as the PSD in 2005, when it ran alone under the leadership of Manuela Ferreira Leite.

1.5 MILLION
According to Lusa, the largest difference in legislative votes between the PSD and the PS (1.5 million) dates back to 1987, when Cavaco Silva won his first absolute majority. The SDP received more than 2.8 million votes against approximately 1.3 million for the PS.
