Prime Minister Antonio Costa on Saturday defended the need to pave the way to a Palestinian state to ensure a “durable peace” in the Middle East that would bring freedom to the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.
“What is important is not only a ceasefire, but also that we can create the conditions for a long-term solution that involves the creation of two states in the region that guarantee freedom of life for the Israeli people and the Palestinian people,” defended António Costa in Paris during his last visit abroad as head of the Portuguese government.
Costa expressed satisfaction with the fact that the European Union was able to reach an agreement and “a common position to demand a pause in hostilities in order to provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.”
“What is happening is a completely unacceptable violation of international law and humanitarian law,” said António Costa, recalling that European countries not only condemned the Hamas attacks on October 7, but also agreed with Israel’s right to defend itself and even attack the Palestinian terrorist group.
Costa, however, believed that “no one can recognize the right of Israel to indiscriminately attack the Palestinian people and not guarantee the right to life, tranquility and peace of the Palestinian people.”
The outgoing Prime Minister traveled to Paris on Friday to attend, accompanied by the Mayor of Paris, a French-Portuguese concert commemorating the Carnation Revolution by the Paris Centenary Orchestra “Column” conducted by maestro Cesario Costa.
On Saturday, António Costa presided over a ceremony to award Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota and Victoria di Rosa with the insignia of the Order of Merit at the Portuguese Embassy in France.
This award was justified by the “remarkable work within the cultural season of the Portugal-France Crusade 2022” carried out by Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota and Victoria di Rosa.
Answering a question about the health of Princess of Wales Kate Middleton, Costa wished her all the best and a speedy recovery.
