The protective status of crows does not allow German farmers to protect geese and calves from attacks by intelligent birds, the online publication Agrarheute reports on March 24.
In the German town of Finsterwal, in the state of Brandenburg, crows terrorize farms. Farmer Kerstin Pezda was forced to dispose of thousands of geese killed by crows in 2023.
The birds crept up behind the goose and pecked methodically. After a while, the goose died painfully.
It’s not just geese that are threatened. According to farm director Bernd Grosse, the crows brutally attacked the cows when they were giving birth to their calves. The crows land on the animal and gouge out its eyes. They only eat soft tissues.
There are more and more predatory crows. They learn from each other and literally wait for the calves to be born. Crows are protected by law. Farmers cannot protect their flocks. Birds can only be hunted individually with permission.
The crows quickly became accustomed to the acoustic scarecrows and shooting simulators. The farmer was forced to move the pregnant cows to another location. We had to completely abandon goose farming.
