Prioritize food production today “hard times” UK farming unions have appealed to the government, online publication FarmingUK reports on March 24.
Leaders of four UK unions, along with the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA), have stressed the need for the government to do more to support farming and improve food security.
Proposals for a new agricultural plan are currently being discussed, causing great concern and unrest among farmers. Many farmers fear that the proposals are unviable and will seriously affect the viability of the sector.
Farmers plan to protest outside Parliament on March 25 over concerns about poor quality food imports and a lack of food safety measures.
Ulster Farmers Union (UFU) president David Brown said the government must improve the profitability and sustainability of farming businesses to ensure the country’s food security: “This requires stronger partnerships between farmers and policymakers so we can continue to produce the high-quality food consumers expect, while benefiting the environment and the economy.”.
“Across the UK, a balanced approach is needed at policy level to consider not only the environmental aspect of farming, but also its economic and social impacts. “Farmers cannot be sacrificed for other social objectives.””Brown emphasized.
