Rui Viana, one of two Portuguese men arrested for drug trafficking in Indonesia, is the son of former player Rui Oscar, who represented Porto, Maritimo and Boavista football clubs, among others. The young man, who ended his football career last summer at the age of just 20, “faces a sentence that could be life imprisonment or death by firing squad.”

Rui was reportedly detained last week while on a plane from Lisbon to Jakarta upon arrival. Higino Teles, president of Camara de Lobos, one of the clubs the young man represented, had already appealed to the Portuguese state for help with the main goal of obtaining a “request for clemency.”
The two detainees, aged between 20 and 30, are university students. They were visited by a consular prison officer from the Portuguese Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday. The Embassy continues to maintain contact with the Indonesian authorities.
