The traditional dog sled race “Beringia 2024” has covered 916 kilometers since the start, the press service of the executive bodies of the Kamchatka Territory reported on March 25.
The race caravan arrived at the town of Ossora. The winners of the nomination “For fidelity to the traditions of the North” were honored in the town of Ossora.
“The introduction of the nomination “For fidelity to the traditions of the North” made it possible to equalize the possibilities of mushers. The conditions for the race were not quite the same in previous years, when a musher with only 10 dogs competed over the same distance, while his competitor had 14. A new round in the development of Beringia made it possible to attract mushers from the north, and today they successfully reached the goal »– said the director of the Kamchatka Tourism and Exhibition Center Alexander Zhuravlev.
According to the results of calculating the total time for running the race route, the best result in the nomination was obtained by Archpriest Vladislav Revenok, rector of the Church of the Savior Not Made with Hands in the village of Esso. The winner received the main prize of the nomination – a certificate for receiving financial support of one million rubles for the development and maintenance of sled dog nurseries. In addition, the lead dog of Vladislav’s father’s team received a commemorative collar.
The rest of the mushers performed in the “United Kamchatka” nomination. 17 years together!”, the contest continues. At the moment, the leading position is occupied by musher Alexey Popov, the next best time is shown by Nikolay Levkovsky, and Anastasia Semashkina closes the top three. The finish line of his race will take place in Ust-Kamchatsk in a week.
Let us remember that since 1990 the traditional Kamchatka “Beringia” dog sled race has been held on the peninsula.
In 1991, the Beringia race was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest in the world, and in 2018 it became the longest dog sled race in Russia (listed in the Russian Book of Records).
In 2010, “Beringia” received the status of an official holiday of the Kamchatka Territory. During its existence, the race has become a brand and the main winter event on the peninsula. Thanks to Beringia, sled dog breeding, as well as children’s sled sports, is actively developing in Kamchatka. Today in the region there are several large sled dog kennels, where not only mushers and their pets prepare for competitions, but also provide tourist services to residents and guests of the peninsula.
