The US Senate delegation this Sunday called Cape Verde a shining example of democracy in Africa, especially in light of the coups d’état that took place in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which the archipelago is part. .
“We had a wonderful conversation with the Prime Minister about the values that we share,” with Cape Verde being “a shining example of the importance of democracy,” said Senator Patty Murray, leader of the delegation hosted this Sunday on the island of Sal by the leader of the Cape government -Verde by Ulisses Correia and Silva.
Patty Murray, at the start of her five-nation African tour, felt it was “important to continue to collaborate” with the archipelago.
The visit comes as the Cape Verdean government, together with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a development assistance agency created by the North American Congress, prepares access to the institution’s third package of financial support for the country.
Cape Verde was declared an eligible country by the MCC in December 2023, along with Tanzania and the Philippines.
Senator Chris Coons, who was also part of the delegation that met Ulisses Correia and Silva today, expressed hope that the support will materialize, making Cape Verde the first country to benefit from the three MCC support packages.
Chris Coons said ECOWAS has “experienced many coups d’état” over the past year, so it is important that “there is a stable democracy” like Cape Verde’s.
The US Senate delegation’s agenda included a meeting with members of the New Hampshire National Guard who are participating in a joint medical transport exercise with the Cape Verdean Armed Forces.
The first MCC funding between 2005 and 2010 amounted to 84.6 million euros and was aimed at developing the country’s infrastructure.
Two years later, a second package worth €50.9 million ran until 2017 and aimed at improving water and sanitation management and property management services.
ECOWAS includes four countries (Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Conakry and Niger) that have been ruled by the military since 2020 following coups.
