The Italian government agreed on Monday to increase police surveillance at sensitive locations during Holy Week celebrations following Friday’s jihadist attack in Moscow.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi led the meeting, which also resulted in increased commitments to monitoring potential radical messages online, although Italy did not announce an increase in the risk of attacks, as France did.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani recalled this Monday that the country had already strengthened surveillance following the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7 to such an extent that 250 additional sites had already been protected.
The head of Italian diplomacy, as well as the leader of the Forza Italia party, also assured that the authorities are closely monitoring suspicious movements and recalled the recent arrest in L’Aquila of three alleged terrorists of Palestinian origin who were preparing terrorist attacks.
