The new and most controversial measures to strengthen animal welfare standards have been shelved in the name of strategic dialogue with farmers, the European Commission said, online publication TopAgrar reported on March 25.
In particular, decisions on issues such as the keeping of animals in cages and rules for the humane slaughter of farm animals have been postponed. Having presented only a small part of the promised changes to animal welfare legislation, the European Commission informed the plenary meeting of the European Parliament on 14 March that these changes must be based on a strategic dialogue with stakeholders.
Analysts point out that this is a total change of narrative on the part of Brussels. In 2020, the European Commission committed to a major review of animal welfare legislation, with proposals on this issue to begin at the end of 2023. As a result, the EU executive only proposed stricter rules for the transport of animals .
This means that the EC has shelved ideas about introducing stricter conditions for animal husbandry, slaughter rules and food labelling. The European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reform, Elisa Ferreira, stated that these issues will require “consultation with interested parties and sufficient transition period”.
