Respond to farmers’ problems “Facing a worsening food shortage”asked Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, online publication Agriland reports on March 25.
MP Claire Carrane said the current difficult weather conditions had worsened an already difficult situation for many farmers: “Although in recent months there have been warnings about possible feed shortages, this appears to be the case for many farmers.”.
Kerrane highlighted that farmers had run out of their own feed stocks and were now facing higher prices to buy silage to fill the gap. “In addition, the current poor weather may put many family farmers under additional financial pressure due to the cost of raising animals.”added the deputy.
Several agricultural organizations have called for a support plan and a delay in agricultural inspections due to difficult weather conditions. The Irish Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) said an immediate support scheme for all farmers should be introduced. Kerrane said it was now vital for Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue to respond to the feed situation.
