The UN Security Council yesterday demanded an immediate ceasefire in the Strip for the first time.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katzstated this Tuesday that the United States’ decision to abstain in the United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip It represents “a moral and ethical error” that will harm the Israeli authorities in negotiations with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
In statements given to Army Radio, Katz stated that “Hamas is working on the fact that (…) there will be a ceasefire without the need to pay anything.” Thus, he has stated that Israel “needs to demonstrate, through military means, that it will maintain its objectives”, which include the release of the hostages and the elimination of Hamas, which points to the possibility that the Army continues with its offensive despite the aforementioned resolution calling for a ceasefire.
“From our point of view, it is a message, a message that is not good, for all those who are on the side of Hamas, that the United States does not support Israel that much,” the minister argued.
Likewise, he has also emphasized that the ties between Israel and the United States They remain strong and has attributed the position of US President Joe Biden on the conflict in Gaza and Israel’s offensive to pressure from the “radical wing” of the Democratic Party.
The resolution approved by the UN Security Council is the first text to gain support in the organization since the beginning of the conflict, after the three previous vetoes by the United States, which abstained on this occasion, provoking the anger of the prime minister. Israeli, Benjamin Netanyahu, who has canceled the trip of a delegation of his government for this week.
Israel launched its offensive against the Gaza Strip in response to the attacks carried out on October 7 by Hamas, which left 1,200 dead and 240 hostages. The Palestinian Ministry of Health has since reported the death of more than 32,300 Palestinians.
