Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor has blocked 11 channels on the social network Telegram following the attack on the Crocus City Hall concert hall in Moscow last Friday.
“We have confirmed the creation of new channels that announce suspected attacks. These channels exist to intimidate people,” a regulatory agency official said on Thursday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously said that there was no talk of a complete blocking of Telegram in Russia, but he warned that the social network is often used by terrorists and called on its creator Pavel Durov to “pay more attention” to this phenomenon.
The death toll from last Friday’s terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow has risen to 143 people.
According to Russian investigators, the causes of death were gunshot wounds and asphyxiation due to smoke from a fire set by the attackers in the concert hall.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) said it had detained 11 people in connection with the attack, which was claimed by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
