At least 3,050 houses were damaged in the recent earthquake in the city of Khoy, in Iran’s northwestern West Azerbaijan province, Jafar Barzegar, the head of the provincial office of the Housing Fund of the Islamic Revolution (HFIR), told IRNA. January 31.
The earthquake occurred on the night of January 28.
The foundation inspected a total of 3,500 homes, the official said. He pointed out that some houses in the city were 80% destroyed.
The epicenter of the quake with a magnitude of 5.9 was at a depth of 7 km. Tremors were felt in parts of Iran’s neighboring Turkey.
According to local authorities, the shallowness of the quake’s epicenter caused more serious damage. As a result of the natural disaster, three people died, more than 1,160 were injured, houses in the city of Khoi and 70 nearby villages were damaged.
On January 31, Iran’s first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber, visited the affected city.
