The National Union of Prison Guards demanded this Friday a meeting with the new justice minister before the end of April, deeming it necessary to discuss the current situation with prison services “before a disaster occurs.”

“There are about 1,500 prison guards missing, and if we don’t create attraction, they can open all sorts of competitions and no one will come for a career,” he said, recalling attacks suffered by prison guards. in recent months by prisoners.
The union leader said the attacks were due to staff shortages leading to “insecurity” in prisons.
“We urgently need to solve the problems,” he said, threatening “strikes to stop the work of prisons, something that has never happened before in Portugal” if the new minister does not accept a union to solve the problems.
