The Porto District Court decided not to prosecute Paulo Morais, an employee CM and from CMTVin a case brought against him by Nuno Cardoso, former president of the Porto City Council, in which the former mayor accuses him of crimes of defamation, insult and slander.
We are talking about an interview that Paulo Morais gave to the journalist Tania Laranjo under the title “País a Saque” from CMTV (issued in October and November 2021 and later repeated) of the donation of the land of Arca d’Agua to Salgueiros, then under the chairmanship of Nuno Cardoso, land which, however, would later be purchased by a company with which Nuno Cardoso himself was associated , who meanwhile resigned as president of the city council. Given that he was accused of corruption during the interview, Nuno Cardoso ended up suing Paulo Morais.
Now the Judicial Court of the District of Porto, in a decision not to render a decision, on which CM had access, but he believes that the commentator CMTV It was not his intention to attack or insult the former mayor, either personally or professionally, but rather to exercise his right to freedom of expression when reporting on situations of public interest.
The order also states that the issues discussed in the conversation with CMTV at the time when they occurred – between 1997 and 2006 – were widely discussed and debated in the public and journalistic space, and the statements that Paulo Morais made in the television program and his statements concern facts that are generally known.
The Porto court also ordered the file to be archived.
