Washington has never said that the possibility of negotiations with Iran is dead, US Ambassador to Iran Robert Malley said on January 31, the Tehran Times reported.
“Biden never said that diplomacy and the ability to engage with Iran are dead, but in fact, the exact opposite was said.”– said Mally, referring to the translation of the statements of US President Joe Biden.
The Ambassador also noted that “American officials do not seek to change the government of Iran”.
“We have had enough bad experiences with technology-driven regime change in the Middle East”He explained.
Remember that on January 31, Washington introduced another package of sanctions against Iran due to Iranian assistance to Russia.
On January 29, following a drone attack on an Iranian defense facility in Isfahan, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said states were considering “all options to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon”. The Iranian Defense Ministry declared that the attack was ineffective and the Pentagon, that it did not participate in it.
On November 4, 2022, amid unrest in Iran, Biden publicly announced his intention to “very soon… liberate Iran”.
editorial comment
The ambassador’s words about his readiness to negotiate against the background of Blinken’s hints about the possibility of the most severe measures against Iran, the strengthening of sanctions due to Russian aid, as well as American support for unrest in the country to overthrow the regime, indicate that Washington continues to count on possible concessions from Tehran. This means that the United States hopes that there will be forces in Iran ready to negotiate, including with regard to assistance to Moscow.
The current Iranian policy towards the conflict between Russia and the West in Ukraine is determined by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who explicitly stated that the conflict was provoked by the West.
Considering all of the above, one can assume the presence in the Iranian elite of an internal opposition group towards Khamenei, with which Washington hopes to negotiate.
